In the 17th century, Clos Rougeard was born on the lands of Chacé, a village established not far from Saumur. The “Foucault brothers”, Charly (Jean-Louis, deceased in 2015) and Nady (Bernard), embodied the last of the eight generations of the family. They were pioneers of organic agriculture from the start, refusing to give in to synthetic products and thus gradually inspiring other winegrowers.
Since 2017, the Bouygues family has owned this impenetrable estate and these legendary wines, real gems located in Saumur-Champigny. Today, the estate finds its balance thanks to Richard, the wine enthusiast, and Jacques-Antoine, the wine maker. A duo which, with the team, works to perpetuate the excellence and uniqueness of wines whose depth, finesse and precision are unmatched.
A preserved terroir
Its 11 hectare vineyard, spread over 20 plots, extends mainly over clay and limestone soils. At the heart of this terroir, so respectful of its microfauna and its microflora, the purest grapes are expressed, produced in organic farming for eight generations. This is evidenced by the quality of its very old vines, some over 100 years old, which have never seen the slightest chemical.
A perpetuated know-how
At Clos Rougeard, the wines evolve and refine over time. The excellence, finesse and depth of these wines are provided by aging for more than two years in barrels and aging at maturity for several years in the heart of tufa cellars, seven meters deep.
The cuvées
In the continuity of traditions, the wines of Clos Rougeard are produced without almost any intervention. The three cuvées in red, in the Saumur-Champigny appellation, come from Cabernet Franc, and the white cuvée, in the Saumur appellation, comes from Chenin, the two emblematic grape varieties of the Loire.
