The Valgiano Estate, in Lucca, has 16 hectares of vineyards. With a variety of grape varieties that almost baffles. But it shouldn't be surprising. It corresponds to the soul of Lucca and its province, that "other Tuscany" which has profound differences, in terms of history and way of being, from the rest of the region. Independent republic, never subjected to Florence or the papacy, rich city, thanks to its merchants, to the point of always being able to pay the enemies, Pisani in the lead, Lucca sent his children to study around Europe with which he traded. This strengthened the ties with other cultures, other religions and, which concerns us directly, other viticulture. On the Lucca hills, and in particular on the Valgiano Estate, there are vines from all over Europe: a conception of the vineyard as a set of vines selected randomly over time.
A philosophy that we, at Tenuta di Valgiano, have maintained. And so we continue to breed Syrah, originally from Persia (although some insist it is Egyptian), Merlot, from France, (introduced to Lucca in 1804 when Elisa Bonaparte was elected Princess of Lucca), Chasselas, from Switzerland, Aleatici and Moscati the whose origin is lost in time.
We have tried to understand the gestures and the history of those who preceded us, avoiding violence to the landscape, buildings and harmony. We cultivate vineyards and olive groves following the Biodynamic method as practically developed by Alex Podolinsky in Australia. We make wine in the simplest possible way trying to transfer this splendid "terroir" into the bottles.
The result is a wine of great balance, intense but also soft, fragrant and highly drinkable. The Colline Lucchesi, the softness and roundness of the character, landscape and flavors of Lucca contrasted with the roughness and harshness of those of central Tuscany.
Parochialism? No, just look at the rolling hills of Lucca from the Valgiano Estate to realize that it is the work of nature. And of the story.
In addition to wine, Valgiano produces "Extra virgin" olive oil, and 3 types of honey: Acacia, Chestnut and Beach Honey which is made from Helichrysum.
The company has a total area of 55 hectares, about twenty are woodland, and a couple are cultivated with ancient wheat, Verna, Gentil Rosso and Senatore Cappelli. We also have a hundred goats and sheep, a couple of dairy cows, for the production of unpasteurised cheeses.
