Pinot Noir - Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
We are in Auvergne 🇫🇷 but further north, in the small AOC Saint-Pourçain (8 producers x 60 ha), an area made of limestone and clay and with a climate influenced by the Loire Valley. The Vines were cultivated in this area in order to satisfy the urgent needs of the nobility of the time: during the Bourbon rule, being this area a few days' journey from Paris and on the line that led to the SW of the country, the prince, while moving to collect taxes, needed to satisfy his needs and pleasures, wine included. He planted the typical vines of nearby Burgundy (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay) near the Château de Chareil. Now, Denis Barbara himself is working those vineyards, carrying a project to recover old vines, among which stands out the Tressallier, perhaps of Italian origin. I opened "Eduard's room", I slept together with him and I assure you that he is a young but very interesting boy: Immediate pink grapefruit, the zest with its aromatic part and albedo (white part) which gives a bitter boost, then hibiscus flowers, cassis, raspberries and ripe pomegranate. Warming up in the glass, spicy and soil-related aromas: pink pepper, juniper, marjoram, scents of humus, like when you go in the woods looking for mushrooms on a summer morning. The sip is a beautiful mix of freshness and minerality, well balanced with the tannin and a persistence that returns to small red fruits and licorice root. The day after the earthy part has become even more fascinating, very strong, almost truffle, an infusion of black tea and aromatic herbs but with a crazy drinkability. Tenebrosamente halloweeniana t’aspetti d’improvviso un corvo nero che svolazza fumoso dal fondo della bottiglia chiedendoti con voce rauca:scherzetto o dolcetto?? Invece t’accorgi,togliendo l’occhio dal buco nel collo della bottiglia tornando all’etichetta che altro non ricorda un po’ Mina...E quindi sollevandomi da terra inizio a sognare. Velluto setoso e sensuale pelle e spezie piccanti,torbido connubio tra eleganza e irriverenza,Pinot nero e Gamay,granitici con trame finissime armoniose e divertenti tutt’altro che orribili tenebrosi scherzetti. Qui solo dolcetti.
