ALTURA VINEYARD – CARFAGNA FAMILY SINCE 1999 - ISOLA DEL GIGLIO (GR), TUSCANY
Our family has willingly undertaken the enormous work necessary to rebuild and bring back into production this beautiful vineyard located in the southern part of the island, just before the lighthouse that dominates the Capel Rosso point. We begin in complete contrast to the prevailing abandonment, in 1999-2000.
The first and for a long time the only ones to have believed in this very arduous and difficult agriculture, in the native vines, in Giglio.
For our pleasure but also to send a strong signal in the opposite direction to the excessive power of the market, of immediate profit, commercial, real estate and tourism. Rare and so hard to practice, our viticulture is called “heroic”…
And here are kilometers of dry stone walls, effort and beauty, social value, totally manual, and then landscape, reconstruction, and protection, custody, derision,
and biodiversity, maintenance, ancient varieties, native, extinction, enormous work and great satisfaction, envy, esteem and burdens on the shoulders.
And here we are, here we live. Present diligent precursors, as seeds are in the field.
People: Francesco Carfagna and Gabriella Bevilacqua – parents. Mattia and Irene Carfagna – children.
Thanks to the vision and work of father Francesco, then of son Mattia and now of daughter Irene, and with the constant contribution of mother Gabriella, the adventure - dream and reality - continues!
Always great attention to a healthy management of soil life: no herbicides, chemical fertilizers, insecticides, social media, poisons or other; only cow manure (when possible), own grape marc and green fertilization, manual oxygenation of the soil on the rows, grassing of the terraces, preservation of spontaneous herbs, no pruning: experiments in the immutable evolution of "wild agriculture". Treatments: flowing copper sulfur (in powder) two/three times between April and June.
Cellar: Spontaneous fermentations at cellar temperature, no clarification, filtration, stabilization or other: only racking and sharing. Sometimes use of SO2 at harvest, total quantity at analysis never exceeding 19 ml/liter.
A lively, free wine, a drinkable wine!
No sparkling wines at the moment.
