The little story (By Fred)
I learned to appreciate wine with Parisian wine merchants. They introduced me to so-called “natural” wines which I prefer to call living. By living, I mean a wine made from grapes grown at least according to organic farming standards and whose vinification is done without input (with the exception of a minimum dose of sulfur when necessary) and without intervention. requiring sophisticated technique.
At the time, I was continuing my studies in modern literature which I interrupted to work as an audiovisual librarian in TV channels devoted to sport. A way of experiencing nothingness that encouraged me to visit wine merchants and then the winegrowers themselves with ever greater enthusiasm. I watched yet another documentary on the harms of intensive industrial agriculture and I announced to my partner that I wanted to become a winegrower. BPREA in Montreuil-Bellay and 5 years as a wine worker at Grange-aux-Belles (Anjou), Clos Rougeard (Saumur), Georges Vernay (Condrieu), Mas de Libian (Ardèche).
I had been prospecting in the south of Ardèche for a year, looking for a place that was both conducive to making beautiful wines and wild enough for me to feel alive there. A year and not a shadow of emotion visiting different places without charm, without soul.
Let's go and see it in the nearby Gard. Three hectares put up for sale by Safer. Appointment made, visit. After 10 minutes I knew this place was for me. Large sand terraces at an altitude of 200 meters on a north-facing slope in the middle of oak woods. Poorly maintained vines, complete chemical weeding, but all around abundant nature. With the agreement of the owner I was able to get to work in December 2013. In June 2014 my wife and I bought a house in Sabran where, during the summer, the garage was transformed into a wine cellar. The adventure could begin...
In 2017 I met Jean-Pierre, neighbor and winemaker. He wishes to cede his land and above all for it to continue to be cultivated without pesticides.
I can't refuse his offer and here I am with 10 additional hectares and some new vintages...
I have been making lively wines from grapes grown in Organic Farming for 10 years now. These are red wines made mainly from Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah grape varieties. The harvest is done by hand. I practice gentle vinification without any input except minimal doses of sulfur if necessary. The goal is to preserve the fruit and freshness. The range of wines goes from very light (D'équerre) to more complex, more concentrated wines (Larrons, Mitan).
The year 2022 saw some big changes, first of all an association and a new domain name. Indeed, my sister Delphine joined me in the adventure and we are now partners on an estate called La Grange du Nord, in reference to the stone barn which recently houses our wine cellar, and our native North. .
