A passionate and passionate winemaker, Jean-Marc, described as gentle as he is rebellious, settled in early 2004 in Molamboz in the Jura, not far from Arbois. His resistance to conventional practices earned him the “iconoclastic” label and gave him a lot to explain about his wine.
Originally Brignot comes from Normandy. However, after many wanderings, he embarked on winemaking in Beaujolais, Champagne and the Jura with Pierre Overnoy - hence his love for the Jura and its grape varieties. It was on Pierre's recommendation that he bought his first Jura vines of around 4.5ha around Arbois before selling them later to fly to Japan with his new project.
Meanwhile, with his wife Satomi, he takes the status of "Flying Winemaker", and vinifies naturally, without inputs, grapes certified organically selected in Beaujolais, Alsace and Ardèche and markets the wines under the name of Vinibrato.
In 2012, Jean-Marc left France and settled in a village in Japan on the island of Sado, with the aim of having a two-hectare farm, combining vines, market gardening and agro-forestry.
The vegetables from his production feed his small restaurant on the island "La Barque de Dionysos", created with the aim of introducing the local population to the natural wines of the world that they love and their market garden production.
In 2018, Jean-Marc set up an association with a dozen Japanese farmers who want to savor their local wines. The association collects muscat de bailey and koshu hybrids from all the vineyards of Japan. “We make our own vines, because there is no phylloxera here, we have planted enough to plant about one hectare in the nursery. If all goes well there will be 1.5 hectares of vines on the whole island”.
The Toki bird, a kind of Japanese ibis, is a protected species, so weedkillers and pesticides are prohibited on the edges of the rice fields where the sacred bird comes to feed. The so-called “natural” culture is therefore easier here. “With our hybrids, we can make pretty, pleasant, simple wines, wines that we drink with friends. We will make our first harvests at the end of October 2021, with a forecast of at least 6000 liters.
In the meantime, Jean-marc is collaborating with various Japanese estates to produce natural wines like "Kuma-Cola".
