Xarel.lo, Macabeu - CT - CT
8.6 / $48 / zero / Selections de la Vina / OK, so a few clarifications are in order. "Anonimo Ancestral" is not a varietal. Roughly translates to "anonymous collection of grapes we didn't really keep track and in the pet nat style". Catalan speakers feel free to mock me, i mean no disrespect. My ignorant attempt at translation is purely based in humble respect. Jeez, no clues for a neophyte like myself. I feel like there are some white grapes and red grapes in there. It's def not an orange wine as my designation indicates, but prolly a blend of red and white grapes. I feel pretty certain i taste some xarello (i know they grow a lot of that and I've had their single varietal version, I'm no expert, i just work with what i know and taste). No real skin contact, except possibly in the smallest percentage that was maybe fermented independently. There is a tiny tickle of tannic grip on the back of the tongue, that's my favorite part - gives this wine some structure that might otherwise be a little flabby. Nice bubbles. Not assertive and last through it's opening. This is about the highest I'd rate a $48 any wine, let alone a field blend pet nat. It's great and all, but if i have $100, I'm getting three Furlani pet nats, not two of these. Being honest. Tasting notes: bright warm hay, prickly pear, slightly under ripe strawberries, "big red" cream soda. Pair with: Giant smoked beef rib and some heavy mustard potato salad with fermented cucumber pickles and dry, sunny, warm, Texas weather. Let's go!
